The Guqin — A Timeless Instrument of Chinese Civilization

The guqin is one of China’s oldest plucked instruments, with a history of over 3,000 years. Traditionally associated with scholars and philosophers, it represents refinement, introspection, and self-cultivation.

For centuries, the guqin was considered one of the “Four Arts” of the literati, alongside calligraphy, painting, and the game of Go. Its music is subtle, meditative, and deeply expressive, emphasizing inner resonance rather than outward display.

In 2003, the art of the guqin was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, affirming its enduring cultural significance.

A traditional guqin is carefully handcrafted using paulownia wood for the top board and catalpa wood for the base. Its construction involves precise carving, joining, lacquer work, and detailed finishing to ensure structural stability and rich resonance.

The instrument features seven strings and thirteen harmonic markers. From raw material to final polish, crafting a fine guqin may take months of dedicated workmanship.

More than an instrument, the guqin is the result of acoustic knowledge, artistic sensitivity, and centuries of tradition.

The Craft of Guqin Making

The guqin is more than music — it is a state of mind.
